Allergy Season

Spring is in the air...and for a lot of people, that also means allergy season has officially arrived.

We’re already seeing it in the clinic - itchy, watery eyes, sneezing, that “why is my skin suddenly so irritated?” feeling, even hives or dry patches that seem to come out of nowhere.

If this happens to you every year, you might be bracing yourself for it...or wondering if there’s a way to get ahead of it this time.

The good news? There is.

From an East Asian medicine perspective, seasonal allergies aren’t just random - they’re a sign that the immune system is a little out of balance and overreacting to its environment. So instead of just chasing symptoms, we can support the body in responding more appropriately.

Here are a few simple ways to do that:

1) Acupuncture (yes, I had to say it)
Acupuncture is one of our favorite tools for both preventing and treating seasonal allergies. It helps regulate the immune system and calm that overreactive response - without the side effects that often come with medications.

Ideally, we start about a month before symptoms usually kick in. But if you’re already feeling it, it’s not too late - people often notice meaningful relief even mid-season. (Yes, I know, spring came a little early this year!)

2) Support your gut with a probiotic
A huge part of your immune system lives in your gut. When your gut microbiome is supported, your immune system tends to respond more calmly (instead of going into full alarm mode over pollen).

Look for a multi-strain probiotic, and start as early as you can - or just start now.

3) Nettle leaf tea
Nettle is a simple, natural way to help reduce histamine levels in the body (which is what drives a lot of those classic allergy symptoms). It’s gentle, supportive, and easy to incorporate this time of year.

4) Local honey
You’ve probably heard this one before, and while the research is mixed, many people find it helpful. The idea is that small, regular exposure to local pollen (through raw, local honey) may help your body become less reactive over time.

Think of it as gentle, daily exposure - plus, it’s an easy (and delicious) addition to tea or breakfast.

If allergies tend to take you down every spring, you don’t have to just power through it.

A little support can go a long way in helping your body respond differently this season.

If you’d like help getting ahead of your symptoms (or calming them down once they’ve started), you can schedule an appointment here.

And as always, feel free to reach out with questions - we’re here for you.
