Things Your Acupuncturist Wishes You Knew (But Is Too Polite to Say Out Loud)
I love my patients. Truly. You’re my people.
But there are a few things I wish I could gently yell across the treatment room sometimes… so here we are.
1. One treatment is not a personality transformation
I wish I could say one session will fix the thing you’ve had for 7 years, survived 3 stressful jobs, a divorce, and your caffeine habit…
But your body is not Amazon Prime.
Healing is more like a series, not a one-episode miracle. (Although sometimes we do get lucky and your neck pain disappears immediately and we both act like I’m a wizard.)
2. Your body LOVES consistency more than intensity
You don’t need to do everything perfectly.
You do need to stop doing nothing and then expecting dramatic results.
One acupuncture treatment + disappearing for 6 months = confusion
Regular treatments + small lifestyle shifts = actual change
Your nervous system thrives on repetition, not random acts of wellness.
3. Caffeine is not a personality trait
I get it. I love it too.
But if you’re:
exhausted but wired
anxious for no clear reason
waking up at 2–3am like it’s your new hobby
…and drinking coffee all day to survive…
We may need to have a gentle conversation.
(No, I’m not saying quit. I’m saying your body might be asking for less….or at least better timing.)
4. “I’m fine” is not a medical diagnosis
A lot of you are functioning at a level that would send your body into early retirement if it had a choice.
You can:
work all day
take care of everyone else
push through symptoms
…and still not be okay.
Your body doesn’t care how productive you are. It cares how regulated you are.
5. Your symptoms are connected (even if they seem random)
Headaches. Poor sleep. Hormones. Anxiety. Digestive issues.
These are not separate problems your body decided to throw at you for fun.
They’re usually different expressions of the same underlying imbalance.
That’s why we ask so many weird questions.
Yes, your digestion does matter for your headaches. Welcome to the plot twist.
6. You don’t have to wait until it’s “bad enough”
You are allowed to feel better before you hit burnout.
You don’t need:
unbearable pain
total exhaustion
a full emotional breakdown
…to justify taking care of yourself.
Preventative care is not extra. It’s smart.
7. Healing is not linear (and that’s normal)
Some days you’ll feel amazing.
Some days your body will process things and you’ll feel a little off.
This doesn’t mean it’s not working. It means your system is adjusting.
Think of it like cleaning out a messy closet. It looks worse before it looks better.
8. Yes, I can tell when you’re stressed
You don’t have to say it.
I can see it in your:
pulse
muscle tension
how fast you start talking the second you lie down
You’re not fooling anyone. Especially your nervous system.
Final Thought
You’re not high-maintenance.
You’re not “too sensitive.”
And your symptoms are not random.
Your body is incredibly intelligent - it just needs the right support (and maybe slightly less coffee…we’ll circle back to that).
