Acupuncture for Menopause: Supporting Your Body Through the Transition

Transitional times for women, like menopause can be a doozy. It can feel like your body has suddenly changed the rules (without telling you)! Maybe you’re waking at 2 a.m. and can’t fall back asleep. Maybe hot flashes are interrupting your day - or your night. Your mood feels less predictable, your energy isn’t what it used to be, and you find yourself wondering, “Is this just something I have to live with?”

It doesn’t have to be!

Menopause is a natural transition, but the symptoms associated with changing estrogen and progesterone levels can have a VERY real impact on how you feel and function. Hot flashes, night sweats, sleep disruption, mood changes, and fatigue can affect everything from your relationships to your work and overall sense of well-being.

How Acupuncture Can Help

In eastern medicine, menopause is viewed as a time of significant shift for women - the waning of yin and blood, which causes heat to rise in the body. Cue: hot flashes. Or an assortment of different symptoms that are uncomfortable. However, rather than focusing on a single symptom, we look at the individual as a whole - including all body systems and how they relate to each other in the body.

At our clinic, treatment is individualized and focuses on nourishing the body and calming the pattern that feels out of whack. This includes supporting the nervous system, healthy circulation, improving sleep, and helping the body adapt to the hormonal changes.

Research on acupuncture for menopause is astounding, particularly for hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia, and anxiety. An analysis of randomized controlled trials found that acupuncture reduced both the frequency and severity of hot flashes and improved several measures of menopause - related quality of life. More recent research has also found that acupuncture and Chinese herbs improves sleep quality in women experiencing perimenopausal insomnia.

For us, that doesn't mean acupuncture has to be an "all or nothing" decision. It means we look at how it can fit into your individual approach to menopause care.

Acupuncture and HRT Can Work Together

Choosing acupuncture doesn't necessarily mean choosing instead of hormone therapy.

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) remains an effective treatment for bothersome hot flashes and night sweats, and it can be an appropriate option for many women.

Some women choose to use acupuncture alongside HRT to address symptoms that may persist or to support their overall well-being during the transition. Others prefer to begin with nonhormonal approaches. There is no single right way to navigate menopause!

Our goal is to help you understand your options and create a treatment plan that supports how you want to feel - not simply tell you to "push through" the symptoms.

A More Whole-Person Approach to Menopause

Acupuncture and Eastern medicine offer a gentle, individualized approach to supporting your body through that transition. And for many women, feeling better isn't just about reducing a hot flash or getting one more hour of sleep - it's about getting back to feeling like yourself.

If menopause symptoms are affecting your quality of life, we'd love to help you explore whether acupuncture may be a good addition to your care.

You don't have to simply endure the transition. Let's create a plan for feeling better!
