Acupuncture for Perimenopause & Menopause: What to Expect During the Transition

Maybe your period suddenly shows up a week early. Or doesn’t show up at all.

You’re waking up at 3 a.m. for no apparent reason. Your patience is approximately three minutes long. You walk into a room and forget why you’re there. And despite doing all the things that used to help you feel like yourself, something just feels…different.

Welcome to perimenopause.

For many women, the first surprise is that it can begin earlier than they expected. We hear some version of this all the time: “I thought I was too young for this.”

You’re probably not.

What Is Perimenopause, Anyway?

Perimenopause simply means “around menopause.” It’s the transitional time leading up to menopause, when the ovaries gradually change how they produce estrogen and progesterone.

And “gradually” does not necessarily mean “smoothly.”

Hormone levels can fluctuate considerably during this transition. That’s one reason symptoms can feel unpredictable - you may feel perfectly normal for a while and then suddenly wonder who replaced your body with this new model without giving you the instruction manual.

Perimenopause often begins sometime in the 40s, although it can start earlier, and it may last for several years. Menopause itself is technically reached once you have gone 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period.

The Symptoms Aren’t Just Hot Flashes

Hot flashes tend to get all the press, but perimenopause can affect much more than your internal thermostat.

Some of the most common changes we see include:

• Periods becoming shorter, longer, heavier, lighter, or less predictable

• Trouble falling asleep or waking during the night

• Night sweats or hot flashes

• Mood changes, anxiety, irritability, or feeling less resilient to stress

• Brain fog or difficulty concentrating

• Changes in energy

• Headaches or migraines

• Changes in libido

• Vaginal dryness

• Joint or muscle aches

And sometimes the most frustrating part is that you don’t immediately connect these symptoms to perimenopause.

You might think you suddenly can’t handle stress anymore. Or that your sleep has inexplicably fallen apart. Or that your brain has stopped cooperating.

Often, simply understanding that these seemingly unrelated symptoms may be part of the same transition is a relief.

How Can Acupuncture Help During Perimenopause?

We aren’t trying to stop menopause. Menopause is a normal physiological transition, not a disease that needs to be fixed.

The goal is to help your body navigate the transition with fewer disruptive symptoms.

Acupuncture can be especially helpful for some of the complaints we commonly see during perimenopause, including:

• Hot flashes and night sweats

• Sleep disruption

• Anxiety, irritability, and stress

• Headaches and migraines

• Fatigue

• Muscle and joint tension

• Changes in digestion

• Overall sense of well-being

Acupuncture also has an effect on the nervous system, helping shift the body away from that constantly “on” state and toward the rest-and-repair side of the nervous system. This can be especially valuable during perimenopause, when sleep disruption, stress, and hormonal fluctuations can start feeding into one another.

From an East Asian Medicine perspective, we take an even broader view.

Two women can both be in perimenopause and have completely different experiences. One may be exhausted and cold, while another is waking drenched in sweat and feeling irritable and wired. Another may tell us that she simply doesn’t feel like herself anymore.

We don't treat the word “perimenopause.” We treat the person experiencing it.

What Does Treatment Look Like?

Your first visit starts with a conversation - and usually a pretty thorough one.

We want to know what has changed, when it started, what your menstrual cycle is doing, how you’re sleeping, what your energy and digestion are like, and which symptoms are interfering with your life the most.

From there, we create an individualized treatment plan.

For most women, we recommend starting with weekly acupuncture. We generally work in a series of treatments because we’re looking for sustained change, not just one really good Tuesday after acupuncture.

As symptoms improve and stay improved, we can begin spacing treatments farther apart.

We may also talk about sleep, movement, nutrition, stress, supplements, or other lifestyle factors when they’re relevant. And acupuncture doesn’t have to be an either/or choice. We’re happy to work alongside your gynecologist or other healthcare providers if you're using or considering hormone therapy or other medical treatments.

The goal is simple: help make this transition easier on your body so perimenopause doesn’t have to take over your life.

You Don’t Have to Just “Deal With It”

Perimenopause is normal.

Feeling miserable for years doesn’t have to be.

If your periods, sleep, mood, energy, or internal thermostat suddenly seem to be playing by a completely different set of rules, it may be time to look at the bigger picture.
