Sugar: the scariest part of Halloween
Halloween is soon upon us, and with it starts the sugar influx for the last quarter of the year. We frequently talk about the evils of sugar when we are in clinic, so you should have a handle on that, so...how do you keep your kids (and yourself) from eating too much?
First of all, set a good example in your neighborhood by not handing out the bad stuff.
Here are some other options for things to hand out:
Pencils
Stickers
Small toys
Tattoos
Baby carrot packs
Silly putty
Raisins
Organic candy
Money - unique coins like Colorado quarters, half dollars, etc. (this depends on how many kids come to your door 😁 )
We had a bowl full of these options last year and the kids were stoked!
Secondly, a good friend clued us in to the “switch witch” a couple years ago. She comes Halloween night and exchanges the candy for a toy. Last year she brought something that had been sitting in the closet since the previous Christmas (it had not been age appropriate at that time, but now was) and this year we have a $20 lego set ready to go. Errrr, I mean, the switch witch will be bringing it Halloween night. Then you can throw the candy away or find a place that is sending it to the troops. This year, we happen to be one of those places - so check out our newsletter or social media for more details!
Happy Halloween!
